H2-ICE exploration at Alpine : Focus on the development of a specific turbine stage for a low emission LCV, using TURBOdesign Suite

Obviously future mobility will be a mix of carbon neutral solutions, with a natural complementarity between BEV, FCEV and hybridized ICE burning sustainable fuels. Green Hydrogen as a fuel could be one option which Alpine has decided to explore actively. Mitigating NOx emissions is one of the challenges of H2-ICE, which requires specific turbochargers development where ADT’s TD Suite offers great potential. The presentation will show how it was involved in the design of a bespoke turbine stage for a low emissions LCV.

Design and optimisation of turbocharger compressor and turbine for a high efficiency heavy duty diesel engine

Elevating the efficiency of turbochargers is pivotal for optimising diesel engine performance. To achieve optimal engine performance, both the compressor and turbine must be meticulously optimised. This research paper introduces a novel approach employing the 3D inverse design method to comprehensively redesign the existing compressor and turbine. The outcomes are remarkable, resulting in a substantial boost in turbocharger efficiency. In this paper, we present a detailed account of the design process and share insights derived from comprehensive CFD analyses. These findings shed light on the intricate interplay between design modifications and their direct impact on engine efficiency. This study offers a promising avenue for significantly enhancing the efficiency of diesel engines and, by extension, reducing environmental impact.

An experimental investigation on the acoustic behaviour of forward and backward swept axial fan design having identical aerodynamic performance

Previous research extensively studied aeroacoustic aspects of axial fans with forward or backward sweep. However, comparing them at similar aerodynamic performance posed challenges. Our team at Hanon Systems, with the assistance of ADT, designed, simulated, and tested fans achieving identical aerodynamics performance, bridging this gap.

Designing an axial contra rotating fan at ebm-papst St Georgen with ADT's TURBOdesign Suite

The following presentation showcases how the TD-Pre can be used to do a quick preliminary design study and then together with TD1 to design an axial contra rotating fan. The final design from this TD suite workflow delivered the same performance and efficiency as a conventional and slower geometrical parametric optimization workflow. It also highlights the ease of use of TD-Pre and TD1.

Development of a single stage small turbocompressor with HFO1233zd(E) for Heat Pump Applications

Maruwa Electronic Inc (MEI) of Japan develops high speed drives and advanced magnetic bearings and has been collaborating with Advanced Design Technology in various applications related to turbomachinery design. In this presentation the development of a novel small turbocompressor for heat pump applications with HFO 1233zd(E) as refrigerant is described. The single stage compressor needed to meet challenging design requirements both in terms of efficiency level and range. TURBOdesign Suite was used to develop the compressor stage, including impeller, vaned diffuser and volute. One key aspect of the design was the tight control of the tip clearance. The stage was manufactured and tested by MEI using the magnetic bearing to control the tight clearances. The presentation will highlight the challenges of the design and test results for the turbocompressor.
