Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustic Optimization of a Transonic Centrifugal Compressor

This paper was first presented at the 2019 ASME Turbo Expo

Optimize High Pressure Transonic Centrifugal Compressors for Noise and Efficiency

With many applications subject to environmental noise legislation, like the International Maritime Organization's limit on turbocharger noise, it is important to consider aeroacoustic noise emissions as part of the design process of high pressure centrifugal compressors.

This study provides insights for the optimal design of a transonic compressor when good aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance are both required.

In this paper you will:

  • Learn how a 3D Inverse Design methodology provides a better solution in terms of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic aspects of the compressor
  •
  • Discover insights into optimal designs for achieving good aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance
  •
  • Understand the challenges of achieving noise efficiency across the entire operating range
